It gives them the opportunity to playfully learn about themes such as saying goodbye, cremation or burial, and it helps adults to talk about them with children. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"633\" data-end=\"657\">What are grief toys?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"774\">Funeral toys consist of construction sets and play elements that mimic recognizable parts of a funeral. Consider: <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"956\">\n<li data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"827\">\n<p data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"827\">An <strong data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"789\">auditorium<\/strong> where a farewell can take place,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"877\">\n<p data-start=\"830\" data-end=\"877\">a <strong data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"846\">hearse<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"850\" data-end=\"874\">bearers with a casket<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"921\">\n<p data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"921\">a <strong data-start=\"884\" data-end=\"901\">cemetery<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"918\">urn wall<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"956\">\n<p data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"956\">and even a <strong data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"953\">cremation furnace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"1099\">These components allow children to reenact scenes they may have already experienced, or that prepare them for an upcoming funeral.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1119\">Purpose and function<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1248\">The purpose of grief toys is not to trivialize death, but rather to make it discussable. Through play: <\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1249\" data-end=\"1477\">\n<li data-start=\"1249\" data-end=\"1308\">\n<p data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1308\">children are given <strong data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1277\">direction<\/strong> and can ask questions;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1401\">\n<p data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1401\">a funeral or cremation becomes <strong data-start=\"1342\" data-end=\"1363\">less threatening<\/strong> because the situation becomes recognizable;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1477\">\n<p data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1477\">emotions and experiences can be <strong data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1467\">processed in a safe way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1479\" data-end=\"1623\">Grief toys are used by <strong data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1586\">grief counselors, therapists, funeral directors, schools<\/strong> and, of course, within families, among others.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1625\" data-end=\"1651\">Development and use<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"2050\">In the Netherlands, grief toys became known by grief educator <strong data-start=\"1709\" data-end=\"1728\">Richard Hattink<\/strong>, who designed several sets.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"2050\"><span>The strength of the toys lies in the fact that children <\/span><strong data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2132\">through their own play<\/strong><span>  can express their perceptions. They rebuild, ask questions or invent their own stories.
